Heavy Equipment Repair (HER)

HER 1100     Service Writing and Equipment Orientation     6 Credit Hours

ESL Placement Level: For English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) students, placement into ESL-2510 or higher.
Prerequisite: AUT 1000

This course is intended to give the student an overall review of legal and work responsibilities of an operator of heavy construction equipment. Safety, inspections, and orientation of equipment and operation standards for all major pieces of equipment will be stressed. BILLABLE CONTACT HOURS: 8


HER 1120     Heavy Engine Rebuild Orientation     6 Credit Hours

ESL Placement Level: For English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) students, placement into ESL-2510 or higher.
Prerequisite: AUT 1000

This course will teach students how to disassemble, inspect, and reassemble a heavy-duty diesel engine. BILLABLE CONTACT HOURS: 9


HER 1250     Heavy Equipment Electronics Orientation     5 Credit Hours

ESL Placement Level: For English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) students, placement into ESL-2510 or higher.
Prerequisite: AUT 1000

Students will learn how to diagnose and repair electrical problems on heavy-duty equipment. BILLABLE CONTACT HOURS: 6


HER 1300     Equipment Hydraulics Orientation     6 Credit Hours

ESL Placement Level: For English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) students, placement into ESL-2510 or higher.
Prerequisite: AUT 1000

Students will learn to diagnose and repair hydraulic problems found typically on heavy-duty construction equipment. BILLABLE CONTACT HOURS: 8


HER 1350     Diesel Fuel Systems Orientation     4 Credit Hours

ESL Placement Level: For English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) students, placement into ESL-2510 or higher.
Corequisite: AUT 1000

Students will learn how to diagnose and repair common fuel system failures found on heavy-duty diesel engines. BILLABLE CONTACT HOURS: 5


HER 1400     Equipment Powertrain Orientation     5 Credit Hours

ESL Placement Level: For English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) students, placement into ESL-2510 or higher.
Corequisite: AUT 1000

Students will learn how to identify, inspect, disassemble, assemble, and repair powertrain components in heavy-duty equipment. BILLABLE CONTACT HOURS: 7


HER 2000     Heavy Equipment Cooperative Internship Orientation     3 Credit Hours

ESL Placement Level: For English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) students, placement into ESL-2510 or higher.
Prerequisite: HER 1100 HER 1120 HER 1250 HER 1300 HER 1350 HER 1400 and consent of program coordinator.

Students earn credits while employed performing duties associated with the heavy equipment operator or repair technician occupations. The student will work under the general supervision of an experienced equipment operator or repair technician and will learn current industry practices. The program coordinator must approve the training station and working conditions. BILLABLE CONTACT HOURS: 3
