Oakland Police Academy (OPA)
OPA 2510 Law and the Public Servant 5 Credit Hours
English/ESL Placement: Placement into ENG 1060 or higher (or placement into ESL 2510 or higher for students taking the ESL sequence of courses).
Prerequisite: Admission into the Oakland Police Academy.
The course provides understanding, explanation, and application of laws in modern society as they pertain to the role of a law enforcement officer. BILLABLE CONTACT HOURS: 5
OPA 2520 Firearms Training 5 Credit Hours
English/ESL Placement: Placement into ENG 1060 or higher (or placement into ESL 2510 or higher for students taking the ESL sequence of courses).
Prerequisite: Admission into the Oakland Police Academy.
The course provides understanding, explanation, and application of the safe use of firearms in the role of a police officer. This includes, but is not limited to firearms skills, firearms assessment, and laws and knowledge related to firearm use. Students will be assessed on their skills and knowledge of firearms. OPA 2530 Subject Control Training 5 Credit Hours
English/ESL Placement: Placement into ENG 1060 or higher (or placement into ESL 2510 or higher for students taking the ESL sequence of courses).
Prerequisite: Admission into the Oakland Police Academy.
The course provides understanding, explanation, and application of the MCOLES Subject Control Continuum and application of subject control continuum principles. This includes but is not limited to handcuffing, weapon retention, ground fighting techniques, strikes and blocks. BILLABLE CONTACT HOURS: 5
OPA 2540 Health, Wellness, and Safety for the Public Servant 5 Credit Hours
English/ESL Placement: Placement into ENG 1060 or higher (or placement into ESL 2510 or higher for students taking the ESL sequence of courses).
Prerequisite: Admission into the Oakland Police Academy.
The course provides understanding, explanation, and application of health and safety principles for self and for community. Basic first aid, airway management, and care for medical emergencies will be emphasized as well as personal health and wellness for the law enforcement officer. Practical application of these principles will be explored. BILLABLE CONTACT HOURS: 5
OPA 2550 Traffic Enforcement and Patrol 5 Credit Hours
English/ESL Placement: Placement into ENG 1060 or higher (or placement into ESL 2510 or higher for students taking the ESL sequence of courses).
Prerequisite: Admission into the Oakland Police Academy.
This course will introduce students to the Michigan Vehicle Code. Students will be taught investigative techniques of vehicle laws, traffic related laws, accidents, field sobriety testing, and auto theft. BILLABLE CONTACT HOURS: 5
OPA 2560 Crime Scene Investigation 5 Credit Hours
English/ESL Placement: Placement into ENG 1060 or higher (or placement into ESL 2510 or higher for students taking the ESL sequence of courses).
Prerequisite: Admission into the Oakland Police Academy.
The course provides understanding, explanation, and application of techniques and procedures needed for crime scene investigation. Topics include, but are not limited to, laws and record keeping, crime scene search, interviews and interrogations and processing of evidence. BILLABLE CONTACT HOURS: 5
