Hospital Pharmacy Technology (HPT)

HPT 1408     Field Experience I     8 Credit Hours

English/ESL Placement: Placement into ENG 1510.
Prerequisite: Acceptance into the Hospital Pharmacy Technology Program.

The student will gain practical experience in drug distribution, labeling, packaging, and record keeping. All experience will be obtained under the supervision of registered pharmacists in selected hospital pharmacies. BILLABLE CONTACT HOURS: 11


HPT 2000     Orientation to Hospitals and Hospital Pharmacy Services     2 Credit Hours

The student will become familiar with the role of the hospital in the community and with the functions and services provided by a hospital pharmacy. The student will recognize the role of the hospital pharmacy in relation to the total operation of a hospital and the provision of patient care. BILLABLE CONTACT HOURS: 2


HPT 2100     Introduction to Pharmaceutical Concepts     3 Credit Hours

The student will identify all drug dosage forms, will effectively use pharmaceutical terminology, will compute weights and measures, including conversion operations between the apothecary metric systems and will be able to categorize pharmacological products. BILLABLE CONTACT HOURS: 3


HPT 2200     Drug Distribution Systems and Procedures     3 Credit Hours

Prerequisite: Acceptance into the Hospital Pharmacy Technology Program orconsent of instructor.

The student will become knowledgeable concerning methods used in the preparation, packaging and distribution of drugs in hospitals today. The student will have an opportunity to survey various hospitals in order to compare the different drug distribution systems. BILLABLE CONTACT HOURS: 3


HPT 2210     Administration of Medications     3 Credit Hours

English/ESL Placement: Placement into ENG 1510.
Prerequisite: Acceptance into the HospitalPharmacy Technology Program; or consent of instructor.

The student will gain a basic understanding of the physiological response to medications. The routes and methods of administering drugs will be demonstrated and explained. BILLABLE CONTACT HOURS: 3


HPT 2406     Field Experience II     6 Credit Hours

Prerequisite: HPT 1408

The student will continue to gain practical experience in the distribution, labeling, packaging and records keeping of drugs. Additional experiences of a more complex nature such as assisting with the preparation of intravenous medications, assisting with medication profile reviews and handling interdepartmental stock medications will also be included. All experience will be obtained under the supervision of registered pharmacists in selected hospital pharmacies. BILLABLE CONTACT HOURS: 6
